Head into the Columbus or Broadway rooms and you’ll encounter a rather diverse range of music from the 60s through the 90s. With ample space, dance cravers seek the floor to showcase their moves. No stranger on the Upper West Side, this spot is the last private party lounge left in the area with 7,000 sq. ft, including two VIP rooms. It's great for holiday and birthday parties, but be sure about booking ahead of time, as this is no place for procrastinators. Its sleek, modern appeal attracts a diverse crowd that isn’t afraid showing too much skin, or, for some, too little.

According to co-owner Marc Glazer, the perennial nightclub that used to house Star Club has undergone its first serious makeover in 40 years. The two dance floors and two lounges are going to be outfitted with upholstered furniture and will each have unique music programming: hip-hop, classic rock, eighties, and house. But what will end up defining Columbus 72 could be Glazer's partnership with Copacabana's John Juliano, the possession of the UWS's only cabaret license, or the enlisting of the man who played Crazy Eddie to spin Euro house and techno on Fridays.

Columbus 72: If you've got to have a gimmick to get the crowds in, then the gimmick might as well be a funny one, right? The gimmick at Columbus 72's Saturday night "Comedy on Columbus" sure hopes so. The 8pm weekly comedy show features comics from the likes of HBO and Comedy Central, and the ever-joyful absence of a cover (2 drink minimum). Guests are then invited to stick around after the show for the night's weekly dance party. DJs in the Broadway room—decked out with a checkerboard floor—spin a mix of old school house and hip hop, while classic rock and a mix of ‘70s through the ‘90s are pumping in the neon Columbus Room. Whatever you do, understand that beggars can't be choosers in this hood—Columbus 72 happens to be one of the few spots on the UWS to even have a cabaret license.
